Another set is on the horizon! Magic Foundations will be released on November 15.
Some of the mechanics in this set have already been revealed, along with a small but significant change to the game’s rules.
Let’s start with the rule change: in cases where multiple creatures block an attacking creature, it will no longer be necessary to order the blockers for damage assignment. Instead, damage can be assigned freely during the combat damage step.
Currently, if there’s a 3/3 attacking creature, the defending player can block it with two 2/2 creatures. Before damage is assigned, the attacking player must decide the order in which blockers will take damage, with a priority pass before the actual assignment. This allows the defending player to cast Giant Growth on the first blocker, forcing the attacker to assign at least 2 damage to the first creature, so neither blocker dies.
With the new system, the last priority pass before damage assignment happens at the end of the declare blockers step. In the same scenario, the attacking player would be aware that a creature has received a buff and could freely assign damage to ensure at least one blocker is defeated.
According to Wizards, this change aims to reduce the defensive player’s advantage over the attacker and simplify this part of the rule structure.
Moving on to the mechanics revealed so far, Magic Foundations will see the return of some underused mechanics from recent sets, such as:
